Stone Real Estate Progressive Mixed Pairs Round 3

Steven Maas, Sunday, 11 February 2018

Round 3 of the Stone Real Estate Progressive Mixed Pairs was held in pleasant, but blustery, conditions. After a very hot morning we were all relieved to see a cooling change come through before the game started.

Round 3 winners were Sue Allan and Andy Thornley with 34 points and a margin of 13, closely followed by Anne Bowen-Old and Allan Old with 33 points and a margin of 28 and then Cheryl Simshauser and Maurice Thacker with 32 points and a margin of 18.

The overall leaders after Round 3 are Mick James and Midori Matsuoka closely followed by Len Sandler and Dafna Orbach. Anne Bowen-Old and Allan Old are a very close third. We can expect a great finale next Sunday.

It was a very enjoyable evening of bowls with the usual sausage sizzle and drinks afterwards. Thanks go out as always to Herb Smith and Andy Little who make this such a great event.

We thank Stone Real Estate for its generous sponsorship.

Stone Real Estate Round Robin Pairs 9 Feb 18

Andy Little, Friday, 9 February 2018

36 players enjoyed a great afternoon of bowls today held in hot and humid conditions. Luckily the breeze picked up towards the end of the afternoon to cool things down a bit. The format of 3 games consisting of 7 ends each gave all players a greater variety of opponents combined with shorter games.

The winners were Ian Tink and Neil Mills with 3 wins and a margin of 22 on a count back.

Second place went to Andy Little and Dafna Orbach with also 3 wins and a margin of 22.

Third place went to Peter Hadaway & Bruce Lee with 2 wins and a margin of 20.

It was great to see all teams had at least one win today.

The Jackpot of $200 was not won by lucky player Col Horne, but he and his round 1 rink team of Peter Nixon, Les Firman & Doug Shell each won a bottle of wine.

We thank Stone Real Estate for its generous sponsorship.

Remember next Friday is the Belrose Chemist Triples and all players are welcome.

Steven Maas, Sunday, 4 February 2018

Once again the 2018 Stone Real Estate Progressive Mixed Pairs tournament was held in near perfect conditions - dry and sunny with a slight breeze. The game format of winners play winners and losers play losers from Round 1, created some tough matches in Round 2.

Round 2 winners were Masaka and Hank Sato on 34 points and a margin of 25, closely followed by Michelle and John Treadwell on 33 points with a margin of 19 and then Therese Bodie and Steve Mauger also on 33 points with a margin of 12.

Once again, the post game BBQ, expertly put on by President Andy Little under the yellow umbrellas, was a great way to relax and unwind.

We thank Stone Real Estate for its generous sponsorship.

Bowls NSW 5-a-Side Wrap Up

Bulls 5-a-Side team

Steve Maas, Thursday, 1 February 2018

The Belrose Bulls 5-a-Side team completed a great tournament at Warilla this week. In an extremely tough format, the boys played 60 ends of bowls per day for three days leading up to the semi-finals and finals on the fourth day. There were 4 sessions each day against the top sides from across NSW as well as the Australian Jackaroos (both Men's and Women's teams) who were having a testing hit-out prior to the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Both indoor and outdoor rinks were used with extremely blustery winds on Wednesday.

In the round robin section of the tournament over the first three days, our boys finished 4th behind Engadine, Cabramatta and 1st placegetters, Warilla and our Triples and Fours teams were almost undefeated except for a narrow loss on the last end of the last game.

In the semi-final matches, the Bulls unfortunately went down to Warilla while Engadine went down to Cabramatta. Dylan Fisher had a great match against Aaron Teys (Warilla) in the Singles going right down to the wire. They were locked up at 20 -20 on the 2nd last end, Dylan was holding match with a very close bowl but Aaron slipped in a dead draw which Dylan could not remove. Very exciting match. Rawlo and the boys put in a great effort against Jeremy Henry and the Warilla boys but ran out of time in the end.

The final was set up to be a huge game between the two powerhouse clubs of Warilla and Cabramatta. In the end Cabramatta defeated Warilla to be the overall tournament winners.

Congratulations to all the boys and thanks to the supporters who were there each day.

The Side was made up as follows:

Dylan Fisher (new recruit) - Singles (3 wins, 3 losses)

Matt Blackburn, Dylan Fisher - Pairs (3 wins, 2 losses and a draw)

Steve Lowe, Crawford Linton, Steve Rawlings - Triples (5 wins and a loss)

Steve Lowe, Crawford Linton, Matt Blackburn, Steve Rawlings - Fours (3 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws)

This was a most successful tournament for Belrose and, combined with our Bronze medal at the recent Australian Championships, has significantly lifted our club's bowling profile. All in all a great start to 2018. We hope to carry on in this fashion for the rest of the year (at least!)

Here is a summary of all the matches our boys played:

Semi Finals: Bulls v Warilla:
Pairs lost 20 - 8
Triples lost 17 - 5.
Singles lost 20 - 21 (great finish 20 all on second last end)

Stone Real Estate Progressive Mixed Pairs Round 1

Stone Logo
Steven Maas, Sunday, 28 January 2018

The first round of the 2018 Stone Real Estate Progressive Mixed Pairs tournament was held in near perfect conditions - dry and sunny with a slight breeze. This is always a popular event and we had a full house of 28 teams from 10 different clubs. Thanks to our hard working club President Andy who put on a sausage sizzle after the bowls finished and everyone enjoyed sitting around eating and drinking in our BBQ area near the green. Thanks also go to Herb Smith, event organiser extrordinaire, for all his hard work.

Round 1 winners were Mick James and Midori Matsuoka on 33 points and a margin of 21, closely followed by Margaret and Doug Murphy on 33 points with a margin of 11.

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all and we eagerly  await Round 2 next Sunday evening.

The Club Championship Fours this year was very well patronised with 9 teams taking part. The final was played on Thursday 25th January in very warm and trying conditions.  Margaret Brady's team fought very hard but the winners were never really in doubt. The team of Lorraine Hazzard, Kay King, Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan played a top game and were worthy winners of the Championship.

Crawford Linton - Zone 9 Bowler of the Year - AGAIN!

Crawford Linton Zone 9 Bowler of the Year 2017
Mark Alexander, Tuesday, 12 December 2017

Crawford Linton - Zone 9 Bowler of the Year - AGAIN!

At Monday's 11 December meeting of the Zone 9 Management Committee Crawford Linton was awarded the 2017 Zone 9 Bowler of the Year with the trophy and prizemoney presented by Zone 9 President Mike Andersch.

Crawford's most significant achievements this year centred on the outstanding success of the Belrose Bulls side of himself (lead), Matt Blackburn (2nd) and Steve Rawlings (s) who progressed from winning the Zone Triples to claim the BNSW State Triples title before capping off a memorable year with a Bronze Medal at the recent Australian Championships.

At Zone 9 level Crawford was also a semi-finalist in the Senior Singles, Senior Pairs, Zone Fours and Zone CoCC Pairs.

He was also a member of the NSW State Senior Side that contested the Australian Senior Sides Championship.

Crawford has won the Zone 9 Bowler of the Year on eight (8) occasions, including six of the past eight years, and certainly shows no signs of slowing down in his pursuit of further honours (and cash!).

Fantastic achievements Craw....another great year!!

Women's Club Christmas Party 2017

Women’s Christmas Party 2017

The Women’s Club completed their year with a bright and very happy Christmas Party.  We are so used to seeing each other in bowls attire, that it is fun to see how different everyone looks when they have their glad rags on. The day commenced with a wonderful array of nibbles which were washed down by bubbly and orange juice on the club mezzanine.  We then took our seats for a delicious Christmas lunch. The winner of the Elaine Taylor Encouragement Award for 2017 was announced as Therese Bodie.  This award is presented annually to the most improved new player and Therese was a very worthy winner.  She has not been bowling for very long, but has already won our Minor Singles Championship  – a great achievement for a new bowler. President Sue Vostarek then took the microphone to announce all the winners of our Christmas raffle.

The music for the day was then turned up by our resident DJ, bar manager and music lover, Lyle.  In no time the lively music had a large number of the ladies dancing.

Handicap Pairs Final 2018

HC Pairs Winners Peter & John
Steve Maas, Saturday, 9 December 2017

Handicap Pairs Final 2018 - 9 Dec 2017

Congratulations to Peter Ferrett and John Elphick who defeated Rody Manning and Peter Spray 23 - 19 in the club Handicap Pairs. John started with a 4 shot handicap advantage and that was the margin at the end. Rody Manning and Peter Spray jumped out of the blocks for a flying start but Peter Ferrett and John Elphick kept there heads down and fought back for an exciting finish. A tight game - well done guys.

Bronze to Belrose Boys representing NSW at Aust Championships

Bronze Medal Winners
Photograph:Steven Maas
Steven Maas, Thursday, 30 November 2017

Congratulations to the Belrose team of Crawford Linton, Matt Blackburn and Steve Rawlings who represented NSW at the Australian Championships in Merimbula at Club Saphire this week. This was the first time that the Championships had been held in 12 years and we are told that  it will become a regular event again on the BA calendar in future years. The competition is a round robin format with two sections of four teams each. The section winners play off for the gold and silver medals whilst the section runners-up play off for the bronze.

The scheduled 1st round against Tasmania had to be cancelled when Tasmania pulled out so our boys had a 1st round bye. Their 2nd round match was against NT and the Belrose boys got off to a flying start courtesy of some excellent shots, especially from Matt, to be 7 - 2 up after 4 ends. From there on it developed into an arm wrestle with 9-all after 9 ends, 11-all after 11 ends and 16-all after 16 ends. We lost 21 - 16 however it was a great game with some more top bowls being put down by both teams.

The 3rd round match against Victoria was more straightforward with our boys leading the whole match and winning 24 - 7 to get a berth in the bronze medal play-off against WA.

The bronze medal final was a fantastic game, tensions were high and you could feel the pressure on the guys. Once again it was an arm wrestle for most of the game with the score at 12-all after 17 ends. It all came down to the last bowl of each of the skips. When Rawlo came to put his first bowl down, NT were holding match with 2 bowls sitting side by side immediately in front of the Jack. Rawlo played a superb shot, exactly the right weight to split the 2 bowls out and leave his bowl on the jack. The NT skip had a run at the shot bowl with his last bowl but missed it so the match, and the bronze medal, was ours.

Well done guys, a great day with a great result!

Ethan Scott-Branagan Selected in NSW Junior State Squad

Ethan Scott-Branagan
Photograph:John Cormio
Steven Maas, Tuesday, 21 November 2017

Congratulations to Ethan Scott-Branagan. Once again he has come to the attention of the State Junior Selectors, having been chosen for the 2018 NSW Junior State Squad. Ethan's abilities were on display in the recent City v Country Series consisting of 3 tests held at Cabramatta Bowling Club. The City Junior Side won 2 tests to 1.

The NSW Junior State Squad consists of two tiers known as the 'Top Tier' and the 'Silver Tier'. The 'Top Tier' Squad will consist of 29 athletes and most, with the addition of some 'Silver Tier' invitees, will attend a specialised training camp in January 2018 followed by regional training days across the year. The ‘Silver Tier’ Squad members will have regular contact with the NSW coaches and selectors, will also be invited to all the NSW Under 18 regional training days throughout 2018.

As a member of the NSW ‘Silver’ squad, Ethan has a fantastic opportunity to strengthen his skills as well as establishing solid training habits. The ‘Silver’ squad will work as a feeder squad into the Top Tier State Squad, with players being rewarded for their hard work on and off the green.

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS go out to Ethan from all of us at the 'Belrose Bulls'
