Belrose Girls Dominate District Fours in 2018

Steven Maas, Tuesday, 29 May 2018

Congratulations to Lorraine Hazzard, Margaret Murphy, Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan who have won the 2018 North Shore District Senior Fours.  Congratulations also to Louise Cook, Denise Levy, Diane Kent and Eleanor Swain who were runners-up in the North Shore District Open Fours. It was great to see Belrose in the final of both the Open and the Senior Fours events.

Belrose has now won four out of the five District Women's Championships this year with Patricia Tan involved in three of them, Benita Andrews in two and Michelle Treadwell and Billie Maas taking out the Open Pairs. The only event outstanding at this stage is the Triples to be played in July.

The Fours final finished in near-darkness with Patricia Tan's team (Belrose) prevailing over Bridget Nelson's team (Turramurra). It was lucky that there was football practice on at the adjacent sporting grounds as their lights provided just enough light for the Open Fours to be completed, with Sue Hamilton's team (Turramurra) defeating Eleanor Swain's team (Belrose).

2018 Club Minor Pairs Finals

Steve Maas, Sunday, 20 May 2018

The Club Minor Pairs finals were played today in perfect conditions. Congratulations to Mick James and Ken Alderton who defeated Riley and Ethan Scott-Branagan 20 - 16 in a very tight match. The score was 3 all after 3 ends, 6 all after 8 ends, 9 all after 12 ends and then 13 all after 17 ends! Unfortunately for Riley and Ethan, the 18th end did not go their way however they won the last 3 ends to close the gap to only 4 shots. It was a game worth watching!

New Women's 2018 Club Champion

2018 Women's Club Champion Daphne Menzies
Patricia Blume, Thursday, 10 May 2018

Belrose Women’s Singles Championship was completed today with a very exciting win for Daphne Menzies.  Daphne defeated Billie Maas who has held the title for the past three years.  It has been a very big week for Daphne who last Tuesday defeated Patricia Tan in an extremely tight game which ended with only two points separating them.  The final game saw Daphne and Billie level-pegging for the first half but Daphne then gradually drew ahead.  On the final end, with Daphne only needing one point, she was holding shot until Billie took the jack back with her.  On her last bowl Daphne drew perfectly to sit right next to the jack, giving her a 25 to 13 win.  Congratulations to both ladies for a great game!

Belrose Girls complete District Pairs 'Double'

Senior Pairs Winners Benita and Patricia

Billie Maas, Wednesday, 28 March 2018

Making it a “Belrose Double” this week, the club’s Benita Andrews and Patricia Tan have claimed the Senior Pairs Championship, only days after another Belrose team took out the Open Pairs event. Benita and Patricia took on Turramurra’s Jan Martin and Jenny Wallis in the final and, from the opening ends, continued the good form they have displayed all week. Benita, in particular, drew close to the jack with her opening bowl on most of the ends, putting their opponents under pressure. Because of this, it took a few ends for Turramurra to get on the scoreboard; once they got underway, Jan and Jenny played some lovely bowls but were frequently taken out again as the Belrose players stretched out their lead to claim the match 21 – 6. (It had been the same story in all their previous rounds — over the four matches, Benita and Patricia conceded an average of only 8 shots per game!)  They will now contest the Region 15 play-off in July.

Belrose Girls win District Open Pairs 2018

Billie Maas, Sunday, 25 March 2018

In a very close-fought final at Lindfield, Michelle Treadwell and Billie Maas (Belrose) defeated Emma Brown and Anne Coleman (North Sydney) by 1 shot. Michelle and Billie got off to a good start, but Emma and Anne fought their way back into the game and, once scores were levelled, the teams stayed within 2 shots for the remainder of the game. Trailling by 1 going into the last end, the Belrose team found themselves 1-up then, with her last bow, Michelle drew within 15cm of a jack that was well off-centre at the back of the rink. Despite Anne knocking up one of her own team’s bowls in her final attempt to get shot, it looked to be 2 to Belrose so Billie elected not to play her final bowl. The measure proved it was a count of 2, and Belrose took the game. (This was the third game in a row that the Belrose pair had won by 1-shot: their first game was won by 2!!)

Our District champions have booked themselves a spot in the Regional Play-Off, to be played towards the end of August.
